The Common Mouse: A Small Rodent Full of Resources

The common mouse (Mus musculus) is one of the most common rodents found in urban and suburban environments. With a body measuring between 5 and 10 cm and a tail longer than its body, it is incredibly adaptable and can thrive in a variety of environments.

Common Mouse Habitat and Behavior

The Common Mouse is ubiquitous and can make its home wherever it finds food and adequate shelter. They are active mainly at night and move around discreetly, leaving behind droppings the size of a grain of rice. Mice are good climbers, enabling them to reach places inaccessible to other rodents.

Reproduction and life cycle

Mice are extremely prolific, with 5 to 15 litters per year, each with 5 to 12 young. This rapid reproductive capacity means that a small infestation can quickly spiral out of control if not managed effectively. Young mice are independent in just a few weeks, ready to reproduce on their own.

Diet

The common mouse is omnivorous with a granivorous tendency, meaning it prefers grains and seeds. However, they can eat a wide variety of foods, including insects and human food scraps. Their highly odorous urine is due to their low water consumption, which can pose a major hygiene problem.

Impact and nuisance

Mice can cause considerable damage by gnawing on electrical cables and building materials, and contaminating food with their droppings and urine. Their presence in homes and businesses poses not only material but also health risks.

Prevention and management

To prevent a mouse infestation, it’s crucial to maintain good hygiene, store food in airtight containers and seal any potential openings through which they might enter. If an infestation is detected, traps and baits can be used, but for effective eradication, it’s often necessary to call in professional desourization services.
